Looking inside Jane Austen’s wardrobe (Chawton, England)
Talk at Jane Austen’s House Museum to tie in with ongoing costume exhibition.
An illustrated talk by Alison Carter, Chair of the Southern Counties Costume Society.
Using letters and novels Alison Carter explores what Jane Austen wore, where and when she bought and made her clothes, and what fabrics and colours she liked. With particular reference to the years 1809–1817 when Jane lived in Chawton, Alison will also link Jane’s own clothes to those described in Pride and Prejudice and the subtle differences that exist as the novel was first drafted in the late 1700s.
Alison warns that ‘I always talk about the underwear, too…’
Illustrated with images from fashion plates, portraits and surviving period garments this promises to be a fascinating glimpse into Jane’s wardrobe.
